I keep a gallery of illustrators that I get inspiration from. I’d almost forgotten about Leanne Hatch, a writer, illustrator, textile and accessories designer from the Pacific Northwest in the United States.

Her illustration work is loosely casual, wonderfully textured and very kid-friendly. I like to draw visually appealing characters and environments that can be appreciated by a person of any age. But sometimes, I would love to climb out of my usual comic book-style rendering and go more towards a denser, painterly style.

Hatch’s work looks like oil pastels with their scribbled fills that overlap and blend with smudginess that is reminiscent of sketching, but taken to a higher level of intensity. I truly appreciate the hand-drawn look of her work and how the strokes are very visible in a manner I envy. It’s a transitional approach between drawing and painting.

I’m not sure if her work is traditional, digital or a bit of both, but I do like it.
